The Ensanglante is a religious cult in the Mafia III DLC Sign of the Times.

History[]

Background[]

A Little Closure 4

The Ensanglante can be traced back to the original settlers of New Bordeaux, believing their bloodline gave birth to the city, they feel a sense of rightful ownership to it. Though they came in search of new a life, they found only death instead. That all turned around when they incorporated new ceremonies, like human sacrifices, into their religious practices.

Their name is French for "Covered in Blood" and they worship Pere Sanglant, which means "Father Blood". Blood plays a major role in their beliefs, and sacrificial bloodletting is incorporated into their ceremonies. They believe themselves superior to all other races to the point that they think inferior "Filth" should be wiped from existence.

In 1908 they were the subject of a revolt, where black residents of New Bordeaux who were fed up with being lynched set fire to the New Bordeaux Opera House while over one hundred of the cities wealthiest citizens where inside. Because of this, the Ensanglante were forced into hiding, escaping into Bayou Fantom for six decades where little else was heard from them.

Reemergence[]

Bonnie Harless 2

Under the recent leadership of Bonnie Harless, the cult has grown in numbers and have moved into the Sacriste Sanatorium. They've recently began reemerging themselves back into New Bordeaux, claiming sites around the city they consider Places of Darkness for their religious ceremonies. Once such place is Sammy's Bar, where the recent deaths of Sammy and Ellis Robinson make it an excellent location to hold the purification ceremony of their newest recruit, Anna McGee.

They've also retaken the Opera House back as a place of worship, considered to be a place of darkness due to its history in almost wiping out their cult. Here they engage in sexual concourse with one another under the guidance of their High Priest in an effort to increase the cults numbers. It is also where Anna is taken to be impregnated with The Blessed by the High Priest, in a ceremony conducted by Bonnie Harless.

When not increasing their numbers through reproduction, they use Nuit Blanche, a local hippy bar in Downtown, to recruit select locals by supplying them with free drugs and alcohol to easy their inhibitions. Buried deep below the bar they have a ceremonial chamber where they pipe in a hallucinogenic drug known as Sky, used to indoctrinate new members into their cult.

Beliefs[]

Pere Sanglant[]

Pere Sanglant

The Ensanglante worship the a deity Pere Sanglant, also referred to as Father Blood or Lord of Blood, who appears as a winged creature with four arms and multiple horns protruding from his head. Pere Sanglant was first discovered by Braxton Harless, who had an encounter with the entity while traveling across the Great Plains. It was there that he bestowed upon Braxton his wisdom and told him of his plan for mankind.

The Blessed[]

The Blessed Symbol

The Blessed is the incarnation of Pere Sanglant into human form, destined to carry Pere Sanglant's holy light and lead the Ensanglante as they rule over the land. Braxton Harless prophesied that with a great consummation within his bloodline, The Blessed would be born into flesh. He believed that under the rule of The Blessed, the Well-Borns will ascend, rising to power to eradicating The Filth in geysers of their own blood.

The Well-Borns[]

The Well-Born Symbol

The Well-Borns are the ruling class of The Ensanglante. They believe that mankind is ultimately doomed, and that one can only find salvation through serving Pere Sanglant alone. Only those deemed worthy to carry the mark of the Well-Born will see The Father after the threshing, where the good will be separated from the Filth.

The Filth[]

The Filth Symbol

The Filth are those considered racially impure by the Ensanglante. They believe they have a divine superiority over all other races, and offer them as sacrifice to Pere Sanglant, who consumes their stained flesh as they devour the sins of the Well-Borns.

Rituals[]

Purification[]

Covered in Blood 3

The Ensanglante rely heavily on rituals in their worship, to include blood letting and human sacrifice. They believe that only through the breaking of the filth can they be cleaned of the shell of humanity they were born into. The ritual involves the cult member slicing the palm of their hand, allowing their blood to pour into the Filth's mouth, who thereby devour their sins as their own stained flesh is consumed by Pere Sanglant. In addition to these sacrifices they leave offerings such as fruit and rum, and burn candles to guide the soul of the Filth to Pere Sanglant.

Consumption of Sky[]

Covered in Blood 5

The Ensanglante use a hallucinogenic drug known as Sky that allows their minds to ascend to a higher plain of existence, opening their eyes and enabling them to be at one with their deity. Prolonged use turns their eyes red, which they see as a sign of solidification of their dedication to the Father. Excessive use can induce a state of uncontrolled psychosis, accompanied by a sense of strength and invulnerability with rapid and exaggerated movement, which is easily seen in the wild behavior of some female members.

Places of Darkness[]

New Bordeaux Opera House 2

The Ensanglante perform their rituals in locations they call Places of Darkness. These are places with a history of pain, death and tragedy; places consumed by sorrow. Each one focuses on a different aspect of their beliefs and will carry the mark of either the Well-Born, The Blessed, or The Filth. These include places like Sammy's Bar, New Bordeaux Opera House, Welty Storage, and Wells Park Middle School,

Symbology[]

Opera House Symbol

The Ensanglante use a wide variety of symbols in their practices to mark themselves, their victims, and their ritual and ceremonial sites. The meaning behind many of these symbols are known only to the Ensanglante, but some such as this one depicting The Blessed with the symbol for the Well-Borns above and the Filth below are seen on sites like the New Bordeaux Opera House and Sacriste Sanatorium.

Facial Adornment[]

A Little Closure 3

When practicing their beliefs and performing rituals, the Ensanglante will often adorn their faces with masks, paint, and even the blood of their victims. The masks are carved from trees and feature symbols and horns as an effigy to Pere Sanglant. They are old, passed down over the years and show signs of wear and often broken. The red face paint and blood is meant to symbolize the blood of mankind washing over them as they're sanctified by their deity.
