"When it comes to meat, mine can’t be beat."
Roman Barbieri

Roman Barbieri is a character in Mafia III.

History[]

Roman "The Butcher" Barbieri is a short-fused psychopath and seasoned Mafia enforcer who runs moonshine and protection rackets out of Pointe Verdun for Sal Marcano.

Background[]

As stated by John Donovan in his file on Barbieri:

"After taking over New Bordeaux back in 1934, Marcano needed muscle to hold onto what he'd taken. Enter Chicago hitman Roman Barbieri. Legend has it that the Butcher's old man cultivated Roman's particular tastes. Papa Barbieri worked as muscle for the Chicago syndicate and was rumored to have taken his boy out on jobs. When the kid started showing an aptitude for the slice-and-dice end of the work, the young Roman was brought into the organization proper sometime around 1926 or '27.

A source in the Chicago P.D. stated that although they couldn't connect him directly to any bodies, The Butcher's alleged to have been involved in dozens of gangland murders. When Sal needed a mad dog to finish off the remnants of the Carillo crime family, he had The Butcher sent down.

The Butcher acted as Sal's personal killer until 1966, when Irish Mob leader Thomas Burke botched a shipment of stolen car parts. Because of this, Marcano lost a bunch of money, so he sent in Barbieri. Rather than just killing Burke, Barbieri crippled him, allegedly because he likes the idea of 'tenderizing his meat a little' and took complete control of Pointe Verdun".

Downfall and Death[]

Eager to cultivate allies in the Irish Mob, Lincoln Clay makes a deal with Burke to take out Barbieri and get his territory back. Using information provided by Burke's daughter Nicki and right-hand man Bear Donnelly, Lincoln dismantles Barbieri's moonshine and protection rackets.

Burke decides it's time to have it out with Barbieri and informs him he'll be waiting at his scrapyard to settle things. With Nicki's help, he and Lincoln set an ambush for The Butcher and disable him with sniper fire. Barbieri is knocked over and attempts to shoot Lincoln, however when he is dry-firing he realizes too late that he has exhausted his ammunition. Even meeting his demise, Barbieri makes racist and snarky remarks that he would never expect to see the likes of the Black Mob and Irish Mafia working in tandem. He warns that no matter what, both Clay and Burke will be killed; boasting that the Marcano family will "bury him in the hole next to his" and that he'll be "sucking his dick in hell". Lincoln then knocks Barbieri out cold.

After the showdown at the scrapyard, Burke takes Barbieri off to be tortured, stating that he will die slowly and pay for what he did. In the mid-1980s, while conducting dredging work, members of the Army Corps of Engineers found a sunken car in the Mississippi River with Barbieri's remains in the trunk. According to Jonathan Maguire, both his legs were broken so many times that there was no longer any solid bone left.

Trivia[]

  • Barbieri's dossier in the Assets and Kill List unlocks after completing "Cut and Run" in "The Blade Stained Red".
  • Barbieri owns a butcher shop called "Barbieri's Deli", as heard in various radio ads. Those same ads state that the deli is famous for having the best boudin in New Bordeaux. However, the actual physical location of the deli doesn't appear anywhere in the game.
  • Rumor has it that some of the meat Barbieri sells through his deli and meatpacking company is in fact the remains of his victims, and many NPCs in Pointe Verdun can be heard saying the quality of his meat has gone down lately.
  • Donovan mentions to Lincoln that Burke tried to shoot Barbieri dead in his own deli after learning of Danny's death. He was drunk, and of the ten bullets he fired, only one wound up hitting a ham hock in the display case instead of The Butcher, who then had his men beat Burke and toss him in a dumpster outside.
