Prohibition was the period from 1920 to 1933, during which the sale, manufacture, and transportation of alcohol for consumption in the United States were banned. Prohibition became increasingly unpopular during the Great Depression, especially in large cities, and therefore ended in 1933. The American Mafia benefited enormously from Prohibition and created a black market from bootlegging from which they became more powerful than ever before. Mafia activities exploded because of the introduction of Prohibition.
