Lock Picking is a gameplay mechanic in the Mafia series.

Overview[]

Lock picking is the practice of unlocking a lock by manipulating the component pins of the lock device without the original key.

Mafia[]

Before Tommy can steal any car, he has to first be taught how to pick the lock by either Ralph or Lucas Bertone. The in-game mechanic works by standing next to the vehicle and holding down the action button until the red bar fills up.

Mafia II[]

In Mafia II lock picking is introduced in Home Sweet Home, where Vito is instructed by Giuseppe Palminteri on how to use the picks he purchased. The in-game mechanic works by standing next to a locked door and choosing the "Hold to Lockpick" option to bring up the lock picking interface.

Locks have 1-6 pins which need to be set by moving the pin until it turns green, then using the wrench to set it in place before moving onto the next. Any mistakes in the mini-game will reset the previous pin, which will need to be redone. Once all the pins have been set successfully the lock will open.

Lock picks can be purchased from Giuseppe's Shop and are only removed from Vito's inventory during Time Well Spent.

Mafia III[]

In Mafia III vehicle lock picking is referred to as the Covert Car Theft ability, which is a perk earned from Thomas Burke associate Hank McGahee when Burke's earn is raised to $180,000. There is no interface, you simply press the interact button while facing the vehicle's door and after Lincoln performs a short animation, the door is unlocked. As opposed to vehicles, building doors are unlocked using the crowbar in the Lock Pulling mini-game.

Mafia: Definitive Edition[]

In Mafia: Definitive Edition lock picking is introduced in Ordinary Routine, where Tommy is taught how to pick the lock by Ralph. The in-game mechanic works as same as Mafia III.

Trivia[]

  • In Mafia III, Lincoln's Journal entry after obtaining the covert car theft perk states that he was given a Slim Jim, however the in-game animation shows Lincoln picking the lock, not using a Slim Jim.
