The Dixie Mafia is a criminal organization in Mafia III.

History[]

Background[]

The Dixie Mafia is a group of all-white Southern criminals with roots dating back to the end of the Civil War, when former soldiers and bandits would rob wagon trains and extort Confederate widows. Bound loosely by blood and motivated almost entirely by the lure of easy money, the Dixies have a reputation for engaging in just about any type of crime, from petty theft to dealing drugs, and prefer to run their operations in areas where law enforcement is either nonexistent or too corrupt to stop their illicit dealings.

The New Bordeaux branch of the Dixie Mafia is nominally headed by Ritchie Doucet. Already close to the Marcano family on account of the Dixie Mafia supplying moonshine and stolen goods for Marcano associates to sell in New Bordeaux, Sal Marcano puts Ritchie and his men in full control of Delray Hollow after orchestrating the murders of Sammy and Ellis Robinson and the eradication of New Bordeaux's Black Mob.

History[]

The Dixie Mafia is quick to establish near-total control over the criminal underworld of Delray Hollow, with the only significant opposition being the Haitian Mob. Their leader, Cassandra, allies herself with Lincoln Clay, Sammy's adopted son and the sole survivor of Sal's betrayal, and they cut a deal to drive the Dixie Mafia out of Delray Hollow in return for the Haitian Mob getting to control the territory instead.

The two key Dixie Mafia operations in Delray Hollow are targeted: the Prostitution Racket in Perla's Nightclub headed by Merle "Trigger" Jackson is dissolved after Lincoln kills Merle and the Haitians restore Perla's to its former glory, while the Smack Racket headed by "Four-Finger" Charlie Kincaid in the First Baptist Church is taken over by the Haitians after Lincoln either kills or recruits Charlie to work for him. With their rackets down, the Dixies' influence on the Hollow is severely damaged, compounded by Lincoln systemically killing off Dixie soldiers, wrecking their property, and otherwise making it nigh impossible for Ritchie to pay his required dues to Sal.

Ritchie starts arguing with Giorgi Marcano, who blames him for damaging the Marcano family's standing. The Dixie boss and most of his surviving men retreat to the submerged ruins of Baron Saturday's Fun Park, where they hide what's left of their heroin while barricading the park and arming themselves for a fight. Having been tipped off to their location by an informant, Lincoln infiltrates the park, tracks down Ritchie, and hangs him from the Ferris Wheel to send a message to Sal and Giorgi.

A handful of Dixies remain, resorting to stealing marijuana shipments from the Haitians and selling large stashes of stockpiled guns to support themselves. Cassandra's right-hand man, Emmanuel Lazare, directs Lincoln to hunt down and slaughter what's left of the Mafia; Lincoln also steals the guns so the Haitians can use them to form self-defense militias. Other attempts by the Dixies to keep their gang solvent after the loss of leadership include running moonshine and smuggling trucks full of untaxed electronics into the city.

During Lincoln's renovation of Sammy's Bar, a Dixie lieutenant named Mickey attempts to take revenge for Ritchie's death by first trying to firebomb the bar and then abducting one of Lincoln's associates and using him as bait for an ambush. Lincoln easily rescues his friend and finishes off Mickey and his crew.

Trivia[]

  • Based on intel gathered by John Donovan, it was Giorgi's idea to have Doucet run the Hollow and exploit the black residents by getting them hooked on drugs and controlling the supply, on account of Sal refusing to let him sell heroin in the French Ward.
  • Donovan's report also states that even though the Dixie Mafia has existed in some form for decades, the organization only came to the attention of federal authorities after committing arson and firebomb attacks against several black churches in the late 1960s.
  • One of Donovan's reports mentions how a violent situation was erupting in 1965 at Bayou Fantom between the swamp dwellers who sold moonshine to the Marcano family and Roman "The Butcher" Barbieri, who had recently joined the family and was eager to corner the New Bordeaux market on illegal booze. The Dixie Mafia defused that situation by brokering a deal, whereupon Sal Marcano rewarded the Dixies by giving them muscle jobs whenever the need arose.
  • The Dixie Mafia is the only group to be marked as "defeated" in the Kill Dossier; likely due to the fact that fighting the Dixies reoccurs several times in the game.
  • The Dixie Mafia is based on a real-life criminal organization that operated throughout the southeastern United States from the late 1960s to the early-to-mid 1980s.
