The Vinci Crime Family is a criminal organization in Mafia II and Mafia III. They are also mentioned in radio news broadcasts in Mafia: Definitive Edition.

History[]

Background[]

Frank Vinci is the long-standing boss of the Vinci crime family. Arriving in Empire Bay in 1908 with close friend Leo Galante, Vinci quickly set up extortion rackets in the Italian immigrant community. With Leo strategizing and Frank provided the muscle, the pair took control of the Southport docks in the early 1920s, which made for easy smuggling of alcohol during Prohibition. His family ruled the city for the next decade, operating discreetly with close ties to both politicians and police.

Vinci-Moretti War[]

When Prohibition cash dried up in the early 30s, tension between the Vinci and Moretti families erupted into the Vinci-Moretti War. His Consigliere Leo Galante conspired with Moretti capo Carlo Falcone to bring an an end to the war by placing a bomb in Moretti's car. This conflict ultimately cost Vinci his underworld primacy, but he remains a powerful advocate of traditional Mafia values, especially when it comes to drugs.

Current Operations[]

Following the end of the Vinci-Moretti War, the Vinci crime family controlled over eighty percent of the Mafia's business in Empire Bay making it the most powerful family in the city. However, the war had weakened them significantly and the Clemente Crime Family moved in on many of their operations. Although they are not as powerful as they were in the past, they keep a tight grip on the docks and shipping industry via Derek Pappalardo, who is vital for their illegal import/export rackets. By late 1951, the Vinci family had retaken their place as the top family due to the deaths of Carlo Falcone and Alberto Clemente, along with most of their men.

The Vinci family makes a brief appearance at the end of Yet Here We Are in Mafia III, where Leo Galante appears surrounded by Vinci family bodyguards to deliver a message from the Commission to Lincoln Clay. Leo requests that Lincoln kick up 20% of his crime family's net profits to the Vinci family and the rest of the Commission in Empire Bay, or that if he walks away from his Empire and skips town, that whoever takes his place do the same. If the player chooses to rule New Bordeaux together, Lincoln stays true to his promise and donates 20% of his profits to the Vinci family. If Lincoln skips town, it is heavily implied that one of his three lieutenants does this instead. If Cassandra takes over New Bordeaux, Jonathan Maguire says there "was not a crime boss from Los Angeles to Boston" who considered her reign legitimate and that she went to war against them. This implies that she either directly or indirectly fought against the Vinci family. In particular, if Vito Scaletta takes over New Bordeaux, Jonathan Maguire states in the Lincoln Clay Documentary that Vito "pays the right people, and makes sure they stay paid". This makes it clear that Vito has his crime family kick up 20% to the Vinci family and the Commission if he takes over New Bordeaux.

Trivia[]

  • As of the fall of 1951, the Vinci family is the only large and powerful Mafia family controlling the underworld of Empire Bay that we're aware of, given how the Clemente Crime Family and the Falcone Crime Family have been defunct since then, due to the actions of Vito and Joe. However, Leo mentioning "everybody else on the commission" at the end of Mafia III in autumn 1968 implies otherwise. What other two Italian crime families took the places of Clemente and Falcone on the Commission, what their names are, and who their leadership is remains unknown.
  • The Vinci family is the only criminal organization to appear directly in both Mafia II and Mafia III.
